What kind of help do you want?
Many coaches are
also mental health professionals, and yet coaching is very different
from psychotherapy. So, how do you tell which is which? We provide only
coaching services through New Leaf Coaching, though we, too, are
trained in mental health and human services. To give you an idea of
whether coaching might be suitable to your needs and interests, we've
described each service below. If you are interested in coaching, but
are still unsure if it is right for you, our free, initial consultaion
might be helpful. Sometimes, a coaching client might benefit from
psychotherapy in addition to coaching. In that case, referrals can be
made to a psychotherapist.
Coaching focuses on the
client's agenda for the future. Discerning goals for the future, making
plans to accomplish those goals--and implementing that plan with
guidance, support, and accountability are the hallmarks of coaching.
Although emotions are important in finding your direction in life,
coaching focuses more on action and values than on emotions, more on
the future than on the past. Clients are often looking to "get
unstuck," but they are not seeking healing. Coaching is less dependent
on in-person interaction, so it often takes place on the telephone,
making it more convenient.
Psychotherapy, on the other hand,
helps people sort out past experiences and emotions in a quest to heal
life's hurts. It may involve painful remembrances, and have goals of
emotional healing, exploring complicated family dynamics, or resolving
difficulties in relationships. Therapy usually takes place in a
therapist's office.
